Maha Shivratri 2022: Why do we celebrate Mahashivratri
According to Hindu mythology, Mahashivratri is celebrated in many ways, including the birth of Lord Shiva, the legend of Neelkanth, and the marriage of Goddess Parvati.
- According to legend, Shiva entered deep meditation after Sati’s death. Sati was reincarnated as Parvati. Mahashivratri, therefore, marks the union Shiva and Parvati’s 14th day in the dark fortnight of the month of Phalguna
- According to Hinduism, Shiva was also believed to have performed the dance of creation, preservation and destruction that night.
- Maha Shivaratri, however, is a thanks-giving ritual. This tale tells of a time when Lord Shiva saved all the world. Instead of swallowing the poison, he drank and held it in his throat. This turned his throat blue. The name “Neelkantha” was born from this.
Maha Shivratri 2022 – Vrat Katha
Sundarsen was the name of a king. He once went to the forest hunting with his dogs. After wasting hours searching for animals, he finally gave up and decided to climb on a tree to rest his head.
The Shivling, which was covered in bilvapatras, was found under the bael tree. While he was breaking twigs, some of them accidentally fell on the Shivling. The hunter also accidentally fasted, and by accident, he offered bilvapatra the shivling.
After several hours, the deer arrived. The hunter fired an arrow at his bow to kill him. Some bilvatra fell on the shivling and broke. This was how the worship of the first Prahar took place unknowingly. Also, the deer went into the wild bushes.
Another deer appeared shortly after. A hunter saw him and mounted another arrow on his bow. The leaves and water from Bilvapatra fell upon the Shivling again in the second half the night. This was also worshipped by the Shivling. The deer fled.
The Shivling was worshipped at the third hour by another deer from the same family. The deer also fled.
The hunter brought his deer and his flock to the water source for the fourth time. The hunter was happy to see everyone and, when he put another arrow on his bow some of the Bilvapatra fell upon the Shivling. This led to the worshipping of Shivling in the fourth stroke.
This allowed the hunter to remain hungry and thirsty all day, and kept him awake at night. The four men also worshipped Shiva inadvertently, thus concluding the fast of Shivratri.
Later, after he had died, Yamraj’s messengers tied him up in a loop and took him to Yamlok. Shivaji and Yamdoot were fought by Shivaji’s Ganas and then freed him from his loop. This was how Nishad became a part of the beloved ganas that Lord Shiva gave him.
